About

The town is located in the Southeast of the island. Chick and sophisticated, Ibiza Town can be broken down into 4 noteworthy areas. Dalt Villa, Sa Penya, La Marina and Marina Botafoch. All are in easy walking distance of each other as they are centred around Ibiza's natural harbour.

Sa Penya & La Marina - Roll into one barrio and you will hardly notice that you have passed from one to the other. Here you will find and eclectic mix match of boutiques, cafes, late-night bars and trendy restaurants. This area is where you can also witness the almost nightly infamous nightclub street parades, with their motley crew of drag queens, dwarfs, models and circus performers. Towards the end of the Marina front, you will find all of the lively bars. Whereas the two streets behind this are home to some of Ibiza's most cosmopolitan restaurants and boutiques (some of which are open until 2am). A little further along you will stumble across Calle De La Virgen. This street is adorned with many of Ibiza's gay bars. It is unlike anywhere else on the island and has a vibrant nightlife until the wee hours of the morning. The street also has several small shops and some quaint little restaurants.

Dalt Villa - Overlooking the Marina, this is the oldest part of the island of Ibiza. From the moment you enter the fortified walls, you will be bedazzled by the age of the buildings and the steep narrow cobbled streets. Winding their way up to the summit of Dalt villa (literal meaning the high town) you will be met by some of Ibiza's most breath taking views and the slightly dilapidated old castle which used to be the basis of life in Ibiza. Meandering your way back down through the maze of streets you will find a picturesque 12th Century Cathedral with spectacular views over Ibiza Town, the Marina, Botafoch and Talamanca Beach. Amongst the plethora of restaurants and bars in the old town, there are also some charming Churches, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Archaeological Museum of Ibiza.

Botafoch and New Harbour - This is the Cannes of Ibiza as it holds the Yacht Club, the New Harbour and Marina Botafoch. This is where many of the luxury apartments are located. The views from these premises can be magnificent as they look out onto all of the Yachts in the harbours, the Old Town and Ibiza's vibrant nightlife. It is in this area that you go to observe the multi-million pound ships that are harboured outside El Divino. A little further along is the Marina of Botafoch with its' trendy Restaurants and hip boutiques. Just behind the New Harbour is Pacha, Ibiza's most famous and trendy nightclub.

History

The history of Ibiza dates back as far as 4500 BC. However, it was not until the 6th Century that the first civilization arrived in Ibiza in the form of the Phoenicians who settled in Dalt Villa. From the 5th Century to the 2nd Century, the Carthiginians occupied the island and used it as a trading post for salt, silver, dye and various agricultural products. To this day there is a UNESCO protected burial site just on the outskirts of the old part of Ibiza Town. The Romans rule lasted over 500 years until 450 AD followed by the Byzantines and the Moors. It was not until 1235 that the last nation to occupy Ibiza came to rule. Namely the Catalans. To this day, the language of Ibiza (Ibizenco) is a close dialect of Catalan.
